Description
Sacagawea, honored on a U.S. gold dollar coin, was best know for her critical aid during the Lewis and Clark Expedition from 1804 to 1806. Although Sacagawea was not the guide for the expedition, she was used as interpreter who traveled thousands of miles during the Corps of Discovery journeys. Sacagawea, a Lemhi Shoshone woman, was the young wife of expedition guide French Canadian fur trader Toussaint Charbonneau.
This bronze sculpture of Sacagawea was created by artist Heather Soderberg. Located at the Cascade Locks visitor center in Marine Park, the locks area was a noted expedition stop on the Columbia River. Coinciding with the 205th anniversary of Lewis and Clark’s return trip through Cascade Locks area, the sculpture was unveiled on April 13th, 2011.
